Greenhouse shelters the plants from winds and harsh rains. However, greenhouse panels can start blowing out from strong winds or the whole structure can be blown over.
How to secure a greenhouse depends on its size, for example, for a large greenhouse you need to use anchor or base plates. In this article we will talk about securing a plastic greenhouse.
So, how to keep a greenhouse from blowing away?
#1 – Secure a greenhouse with fixings pegs or stakes
You can use pegs to hold down small plastic greenhouses and low polytunnel structures. However, if you live in the area with strong winds, go for ground anchor stakes as these are sturdier.
#2 – Bury extra greenhouse cover material in trenches
Some plastic greenhouses come with the extra PVC glazing which you can bury in trenches. Dig the trenches 20 cm deep and bury the cover with the sand. It provides a good wind protection and secures a greenhouse structure.
#3 – Use reinforcement patches
Attache the reinforcement patches with a duct tape on the inside and outside. You can also punch some holes through them and tie the cover onto the frame joints.
#4 – Screw a greenhouse to a fence
It is a good idea to tie your plastic greenhouse to a fence to keep a greenhouse from blowing away. Tie your greenhouse to a fence using a rope. Alternatively, you can screw it to a fence if you are okay with making a few holes in the frame.
#5 – Stack paving slabs around the base
Staking paving slabs to weight down the bottom of the plastic greenhouse is a good option. It will keep a greenhouse from blowing away. Instead of paving slabs you can use extremely heavy stones or a bag of sharp sand.
#6 – Load the bottom shelf with paving slabs
In addition to stacking paving slabs on the bottom of a greenhouse you can load the bottom shelf with bricks. It will help to keep a plastic greenhouse in place. Putting two bricks on the bottom shelf might be sufficient to secure a greenhouse from moderate winds.
#7 – Keep a plastic greenhouse in a sheltered spot
To keep a greenhouse from blowing away you can put it in a sheltered area. It might be a spot in the corner of the garden or it might be behind the garage. Some gardeners opt for using wind netting and installing wooden fence around the greenhouse. However, keep in mind that it should be a sunny spot so you meet the lighting requirements.
#8 – Tape the area where the PVC attaches to metal frame
It is a cheap option to add some security to your greenhouse to withstand winds. Once the wind gets inside a greenhouse it will find its escape leading to the broken frame and glazing. So, go ahead and tape not only the outside but the inside as well to block all the gaps in the frame.
